Title number: 374
LSA ID: LSA/486
Description: A documentary filmed in schools across the district of Hayes and Harlington showing their pupils from the new entrants to those about to leave. It begins on a Saturday with children playing on a recreation ground in their weekend leisure time. Then it's on to weekday and time at school. A teacher dressed in a sari guides pupils in their lesson. The younger children get to examine animals and to dance. They receive their daily milk allocation at school. Then there are more lessons, in music, arithmetic, science, physical education, written composition and art. Some children role-play using the telephone and a post office. At lunchtime they eat school dinners and interact with the dinner ladies, before enjoying the playground. After lunch there is a dance presentation, a visit by parents, a trip to the school library and reporting back on a trip to Devon. Activities are somewhat different for the older children, where the lessons include music, typing (for the girls only), advanced maths (said to be suitable for the age of the computer), a machine shop class, woodwork, boat building, dressmaking and cooking. The students do engage in some more recreational activity though with a country dancing meet out on the school field and sports practice at Hayes & Harlington Sports Stadium. The film ends with the school sports day awards and the end of term prize giving.
