Going Local

Summary: A docu-fiction commissioned by Hackney Community Action to explore a new policy on decentralisation to reduce bureaucracy.
Title number: 22985
LSA ID: LSA/30188
Description: The film concerns the problems with bureaucracy in Hackney with key set pieces: a man at a piano, a young woman named Jane who cannot find anyone to speak to in her local council offices about litter and rubbish in the streets, an older woman named Nancy from Walsall who solves a gas fire issue in her home easily due to the nature of local services in her town, to a local Hackney community group seeking to establish their own community centre in an empty council-owned building, the higher-up council men in suits making decisions on local issues. The film concerns the problems of gentrification, poorly built council flats and how decentralisation can cut bureaucracy and distribute decision-making power to the local community. The film ends with a solution: local offices with local teams, in addition to professional decisions made by those trained and qualified to do so.
