Title number: 3334
LSA ID: LSA/4373
Description: A film about Kingswood House made by young film-makers who use the house for their homework club. Kingswood House is a stately home surrounded by Sydenham Hill and Dulwich Wood. One half of the 60-acre wood is owned by Dulwich College, the other by Southwark Council and managed by London Wildlife Trust. Kingswood House is now owned by Southwark Council, who work with the Friends of Kingswood House, the Tenants Association and the Rainbow Club to run it. It was built in 1811 by a wealthy solicitor called William Vizard who took a lease from Dulwich College. In 1890s, the lease was bought by a Scot, John Lawson Johnston, who turned it into a Scottish Lodge. There is a picture of Bonny Prince Charlie in the Culloden Room. The staircase is original as are the tapestries. One of the film-makers interviews an old lady who worked as under parlour maid when Lord Vestey owned the estate at the beginning of the twentieth century. The young film-makers end the film by saying they have learned a lot about the house and how sad it is that is has been vandalized.
