Description: The event is hosted by Maureen Roberts, who at the time was a trustee of the Black Cultural Archives (BCA), Senior Development Officer at the London Metropolitan Archives, a qualified teacher, and a published author. She opens the event by introducing the BCA’s Documenting the Archive project and the Black Women’s Oral History Project, outlining their importance in preserving and sharing Black British history. Kelly Foster, who worked on both projects, explains how funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund supported the cataloguing of the archive and improved public access to its collections. She highlights the wide range of materials held by BCA and the ongoing efforts to collect records from community members, particularly those connected to the Black women’s movement as part of the oral history project. She also discusses plans for a purpose-built archive at Raleigh Hall. Mia Morris, project lead for the oral history project, introduces clips from the oral history interviews. These interview clips were not filmed by the event filmmaker, and the PowerPoint presentation referenced throughout the event was also not captured due to limited camera movement and stabilisation issues. Volunteer Ego Ahaiwe also shares reflections on her experience working on the project. Writer and activist Stella Dadzie, co-author of The Heart of the Race, the book that inspired the oral history project, speaks about her experiences during the women’s movement and the struggle for Black liberation in Britain. She reflects on the National Black Women’s Conference and the Organisation of Women of Asian and African Descent (OWAAD), connecting those histories to the present day. She also reads the poem ‘To a Dear Friend’ by Iyamide Hazeley from The Heart of the Race. The event concludes with a Q&A session featuring Kelly, Mia, and Stella. The first question comes from Linda Bellos, who is not seen on camera due to filming limitations. Lindiwe Mimi Tsele and Mavis Best also join the discussion, sharing their own reflections and experiences.
