Summary: Terry Flaxton’s documentary examines the challenges of One-Person-Operated (OPO) buses, introduced in the early 1980s, featuring interviews with conductors, bus drivers and the general public.
Title number: 22990
LSA ID: LSA/30205
Description: The film begins with a cheery tune as a driver prepares for their day. Talking head interviews with conductors and drivers detail their struggles in their line of work. In the 1960s and 1970s, as bus ridership fell due to the increase in private vehicles, London Transport chose cheaper off-the-peg buses and introduced driver-only operations without conductors. In the interviews with conductors, we see the cost of such cuts:from conductor redundancies leading to the reduction of the predominantly female and non-white conductor workforce to access issues, as conductors provide a crucial role in helping the elderly and those with disabilities aboard. Between the interviews, we see snapshots of archive photos of the bus workers, clips from buses driving in London to bus workers interviewed at their homes with their families and at the pub with their former colleagues. Throughout the film, we also follow a driver called Tony, hearing his voiceover about his struggles as an OPO.
Drivers speak about both the physical and mental hardships they face in various talking-head interviews: working long hours in solitude while handling all passenger tickets by themselves, sorting change, handling queues and sometimes, facing assault from the passengers as they are working alone. The documentary also questions the butterfly effect on families, with the wives of drivers noting a change in behaviour, aggression and increased agitation at home due to the stresses at work. Drivers also speak about suffering poor health as a result of long hours of stress.
