Summary: Revival, London 1989-1993, a photograph book published by Hoxton Mini Press and consequently an exhibition funded by the London Borough of Culture and Arts Council, gives an insight into the daily lives of the African-Caribbean and Irish communities in Brent. Roy Mehta took photographs of the local communities and the environment that surrounded them in Harlesden and Willesden. Mehta gradually got to know people and began to be accepted into churches, pubs, homes, dancehalls and other places in the community. The book and the exhibition enabled Mehta to find some of the people in the book, produce new portraits of them and make a short film about their lives.

The film produced and directed by Roy Mehta shows Robert and Brian Smythe briefly talk about growing up in Harlesden, and reflecting retrospectively about a photograph taken of them as children in 1989 which featured in the ‘Revival’ book and exhibition.
