Today Prog. Friday Debate - Future of the Docks
1/2 inch open-reel videotape Black & White Sound; Silent c1970 30:11
Summary: An edited black-and-white handheld video in three unrelated parts; a group of friends sat at home, jovial; a rehearsal of a school play about a pet dog; and a short clip about the Friday Debate around the future of the Southwark docks.
Title number: 21546
LSA ID: LSA/28249
Description: The first 6 minutes have no sound – we see an initial sign by ‘Turd TV’ that reads ‘introducing armpit’ alongside an illustration of an armpit. The camera zooms in on various people’s faces, two men and two women. The man then holds up a spittoon, introducing the 19th-century object and spitting game. The two women look at the camera and jokily say, ‘Stick your finger up your bum’.
The second half of the film records the rehearsal of a school play about a young boy who wants to buy a dog with his pocket money, and is faced with parents who refuse. Other children perform as dogs on all-fours, and two children also play the parents.
The final two minutes of the film are unstable newsreel footage of a TV Debate about the future of the Southwark docks and its future development plans.
