Description

A municipal film on the award of the freedom of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich to the Royal Regiment of Artillery.

The film begins with exterior shots of the Royal Artillery Barracks. The Royal Artillery band plays, conducted by Liet. Col. Owen Geary Crowds assemble along Wellington Street and outside the Town Hall in Woolwich for the ceremony, its a very wet day and umbrellas and Macintosh's are much in evidence. The Royal Artillery Band and the Guard of Honour arrive at the Town Hall. The members of the council take seats outside the Town Hall, with the Mayoral party and the Master Gunner, St James's Park (Field-Marshall Lord Alanbrooke) assembling on the dais beneath a canopy. There is a fanfare of trumpets and general salute. The Mayor (Councillor J.W. Andrews) addresses the Master Gunner and the assembled men, before presenting a silver casket containing the Freedom Scroll to Viscount Allanbrooke. The Master Gunner acknowledges his thanks and leads the Mayor on an inspection of the troops. The Mayor then invites the Master Gunner to march contingents of the Royal Artillery through the streets of the Borough and they proceed to do so, with representative detachments of all sections of the regiment evident. There are Regular and Territorial soldiers, including mounted and mechanized sections. There are also veteran members of the regiment from both World Wars and a contingent of young soldiers.

Further information

The production company WBC Film Unit is presumably the Film Unit of Woolwich Borough Council. The film was shot on Friday 28th March 1954.

On 10 November 2016, JOHN PULLAN said:
Owen Geary was my grandfather, I met him when I was very young, sadly he died when I was five, I have photos, & vinyl records that he conducted on , also the book on the royal artillery, where you can find a whole chapter on Owen Geary, a very much loved and respected man & highly decorated, it saddens me that I never had the chance to get to know him, my father Fred Pullan spoke of him often, and held him in very high regard.
On 10 July 2016, Janice Carolan said:
I am the Granddaughter of Liet. Col. Owen Geary .Sadly he died before i was born. But i was enjoy reading any article about him.
