What is an archive?

An archive is a collection of information, known as a record. This can include written documents, photographs, audio and video recordings, digital files, maps and more.  Some archives are organised and maintained by institutions like libraries, museums, government agencies, and universities, but they can also be created by individuals or organisations for personal or professional purposes. Archives provide first-hand information or evidence relating to historical events or figures.

The primary purpose of an archive is to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of materials for future reference, research, or study. Archives can serve as valuable resources for historians, researchers, and the general public, providing insights into the past and contributing to the understanding of cultural, social and political environments.

Can I join if I’m a non-black person?

This project is specifically for Black individuals. Black stories within the archives have been historically underrepresented and therefore dedicated time and care is required to unearth films in our screen archives, catalogue new material and re-interpret collections. We understand that there are several under-represented groups within the archives and we plan to curate projects focused on bringing their  stories to the forefront.

Where will the sessions take place?

Our initial introduction session will take place at The Africa Centre, Southwark. Following this, sessions will mainly take place at Brixton House or Bernie Grant Arts Centre. You will be allocated into a group that will attend one or the other. You will also have the opportunity to visit R3store Studios and Tower Hamlet Archives.

What time will the sessions take place?

Most of the sessions will take place from 6-8pm on either Tuesdays or Thursday. Visits to R3store will take place during the day, however you will be able to book slots that work best for you.

Do I need to attend every workshop?

Each workshop is unique and explores different priorities of archiving. For this reason we would encourage you to attend all sessions in order to gain a wider breadth of knowledge, connections and experience. However, we understand you’ll have unexpected priorities, if you can’t attend a session that is okay, we would appreciate notice to allow someone else the opportunity to pop into the session you’ve missed.

How do I receive my honorarium?

You will need to send an invoice to Film London who will provide invoice templates. Please note that the honorarium is dependent on attendance.

How many people will be in my group?

Group sizes will vary between 5-20 depending on the session. We will have one session where we gather as a full cohort.

I have no previous archive experience. Can I join?

Absolutely! This is a chance for you to gain knowledge and connect with other enthusiasts.

I have previous archive experience. Can I join?

Yes! We would love for you to join if you feel the course structure will continue to up-skill you and feed your creativity.

How many items can I get digitised?

Each Ambassador will get a minimum of one item digitised. However we encourage you to bring all available home movies as we will likely have scope to increase this!

Does my collection go to the London’s Screen Archives website?

Yes! It will live in a collection specific to the Black Screen Heritage Ambassadors. The aim of being an ambassador is to lead by example by showcasing your own home movies. However, these films are your property and will only live on the website with your consent. You will also write the description of your films so that it is accurately categorised.
