Mountview High School: The Video
VHS Colour Sound 1987 29:15
Summary: The end of an era at Mountview High School as it prepares to close.
Title number: 2342
Description: An informal look at activities at the Mountview High School in Harrow, made shortly before its closure in the July of 1987. It features no commentary and uses only music and incidental sound. The video begins with children arriving at the school along Fisher Road before moving on to record activities in the school office, where secretaries are typing letters, photocopying, and answering the telephone. The Headmaster, Mr P. Pykett leads an assembly in the main hall, which also includes the award of trophies to champion badminton players and a music teacher putting on a record of 'African Gloria' to a very bored looking group of students. The remainder of the video is mainly a trip around classrooms taking a look at lessons in various subjects. Didactic teaching styles dominate with blackboards and overhead projectors supporting teachers communicating topics in chemistry, physics, and geography. Students do also get to do some biology laboratory work, cook pies and practise musical instruments however. There's also more practical work in the woodwork shop and an art class, and a chance to role-play in the German language class. A survey of a typing class with boys and girls lined up on desks copying out text points to the tedious meaninglessness of office jobs ahead. There are also views of an indoor soccer match, badminton games during physical education classes, and shots of pupils queuing for unappealing fair at lunchtime in the school canteen.
