Summary: A broken down car and some friendly advice to seek a repair manual at the local library begins an animated slideshow from the 1980s, that talks about all the different services that Enfield Libraries can offer. Two and a half million book loans from the four main libraries and eleven local libraries, as well as a travelling mobile library, is just the start of this journey of discovery. The library service was viewed as an integral part of a modern caring society, where access to all knowledge was an accepted right and the provision of a local library a statutory requirement. Every library had a children's department and the library service had begun to cater for a more diverse community, with a specialist librarian and selection of books. Resource centres provide a location for more directed research from the libraries' specialist and knowledgable staff. From the museum at Forty Hall to the two arts centres, it was clear that in 1985 there was a lot on offer from the Enfield Library Service, including how to fix your car!
