BT Archives moving image collection spans a wide variety of topics and is held on a wide variety of media. Our films cover topics as diverse as information on the use of the telephone, how the network operates, staff training, trans-Atlantic communications, 999 service, BT Tower and improvements in technology. The original films are held on a wide variety of media including 16mm reel film, 1-inch film, Beta SP, Umatic and digital media. Where possible we provide digital access copies of our films and a current program of digitising films, on media formats which we do not have the means to play, means that we are consistently making new titles available to researchers.
BT Archives preserves the historical information of British Telecommunications plc and its predecessors from the early part of the nineteenth century up to the present day, effectively the history of telecommunications services in the United Kingdom and from the UK to overseas.
BT Archives also acts as the corporate memory for the BT Group of companies; vital historical information is preserved and made available where appropriate to aid BT's performance, raise the company profile and support BT as one of the world's leading providers of telecommunications services.
