The Story of the Barking Barrage

Description

Video about the construction of the Barking Barrage on the River Roding, and about Barking's history.

The video follows a young Barking resident called Peter as a marker of recent developments around Barking Creek at the end of the River Roding. The history of Barking is told with the use of illustrations, archival photographs and models depicting Barking Abbey and the old fishing port and docks around the Town Quay. As the history reaches the 1980s, the video tells the story of why the local authorities chose to build a barrage on the river using computer graphics to explain how a barrage works. Some video from spring and summer of 1997 shot by engineers records the construction process of the barrage at various stages. The completed barrage is shown with a look at the fish ladder, eel pipe, footbridge and the weir and gates controlling water levels. The lighting around the gates are shown at night, along with the security features that ensure safety. Aerial views show the Barking Barrage, the Thames Barrier and the Roding Barrier at the mouth of the River Roding. The video ends with a consideration of future plans for the area around the Mill Pond, Town Quay and Abbey Road dockside.
